The Historic Markers developed by Dover Main Street are located at various locations around the downtown featuring a picture “then” in contrast to the current view “now”.
Dover Main Street’s historic preservation work is evident in the Historic Marker Program. The markers are designed to illustrate the history and development of downtown through historic photographs accompanied by explanatory narratives.
Markers are strategically placed throughout downtown to enable visitors to view the marker and look up to see the exact same scene in modern day Dover, giving a unique perspective on not only how things have changed, but also how they have remained the same.
The markers also incorporate dialogue of historical commentary explaining what happened at that location at some point in time.
They are used to foster interest in Dover’s rich history, as well as providing walking points of interest around our downtown businesses.
